2024 ROUNDUP

The year is drawing to a close and it feels like a good opportunity to reflect and look back on recent achievements and proud moments. So here is Makower's collectively compiled 2024 round up:

1. Our Block H1 within Barratt London's Hendon Waterside was shortlisted for the RIBA London Awards 2024. Hendon Waterside is one of north-west London’s major regeneration projects, located near Hendon Station on slopes leading down from the historic Watling Street (the A5) to the Welsh Harp Reservoir. Located to the south of the site, Block H1 stitches the new development into its context. Its playful side facades and angled geometries establish a positive relationship to the neighbouring buildings along the Broadway.

2. Also at Hendon Waterside, construction has begun on Block C, while our bespoke, local health centre will be starting on site imminently.

3. Our regeneration vision for Watford Market received the green light. Our proposals will transform the market into a thriving intergenerational campus that celebrates Watford’s cultural roots while creating a model for integrated city living and setting a benchmark for how town centres can adapt to the challenges and opportunities of the future.

4. We put forward two major schemes in Barking for planning consent.

5. Our two-phase masterplan vision for Plymouth’s West End was accepted, creating 500 homes in the area around the listed Art Deco Colin Campbell House.

6. We had our first ethics debate where we invited other experienced architects from a wide-range of practices to explore how we as architects can better align our work with societal needs, equity, and sustainability while navigating brief demands, policy frameworks, and financial pressures.

7. Our Block L within Eastman Village in Harrow has been completed. Eastman Village is a mixed-use 2,000 homes development by Barratt London and Hyde, on what was once the largest Kodak factory outside the US. We drew on Kodak’s colour film legacy to inspire the vibrant colour palette detailing around the buildings’ entrances. And our Block J - the largest plot on the site - is due to be finished mid 2025.

8. We have made our first gateway 2 submission and are working towards another one. Watch this space!
