GATEWAY TO CLAPHAM
A phased, community-led transformation of Clapham Bridge and its surrounding public realm
Gateway to Clapham is a winning competition proposal which reimagines Clapham High Street's bridge as a community landmark with a strong civic presence and clear identity. Leading a multi-disciplinary team, we conceived the bridge as a theatrical canvas to invite hands-on creation and visible participation.

The existing congested junction and uninspiring bridge.

The existing congested junction and uninspiring bridge.
The project responds to the bridge’s critical role as one of the few crossings over the railway, its location at the gateway to the Clapham High Street Conservation Area, and the intensity of daily movement through the site.
A phased strategy delivers immediate public realm improvements around the bridge, followed by enhanced movement and plaza spaces, culminating in a long-term masterplan connecting the station, bridge and common.

The bridge interior is conceived as a human-scale canvas for community-authored artwork
The primary intervention is the cladding of both bridge elevations with a simple, robust red mesh system. Backlit signage announcing Clapham creates a highly visible and cinematic piece of infrastructure, legible day and night. The facade is intentionally understated, allowing meaning to emerge through community contribution rather than imposed imagery.
Through a year-long programme of engagement, the bridge becomes an evolving, community-designed artwork. Individual elements — each made by a different person or group — are attached to the facade over time. While each is unique, together they form a coherent, shifting presence across the bridge, like an organic murmuration. As elements are added, adapted or replaced, the bridge records change and participation, becoming a marker of Clapham over time.

The plaza planned for phase 2 and 3 of the project: to enhance the pedestrian’s journey, be a community anchor and act as a gathering space as well as a felxible space for events and markets
